Who are champions?

Champions are mentors who partner with students virtually to support them with executive functioning skills and academics.

Executive function is the mental process that allows us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and multitask successfully. We aren’t born with these skills; some people need more support than others in developing these skills. This is where WEC Champions come in. The aim of the Champion Program is to provide support in developing these executive function skills.

Champions meet virtually with their matched students 3 times per week, helping to manage syllabi and assignments, support in completing and turning in work on time, and assist with test prep and organization. More importantly, Champions model confidence, competence, and character in getting this work done. Students learn by example. Through the modeling of their WEC Champion, children feel connected in their work, build self-esteem, perform better academically & socially, and no longer battle with parents over schoolwork.

My children enjoyed working with WEC Champions. Each was thoughtfully paired with a champion and met virtually at a mutually agreed upon time for academic support. My children liked knowing that there was someone a zoom click away that was able to work with them on homework, projects, or preparing for quizzes and tests. They fostered wonderful working relationships and really valued their sessions. This was just the type of service we needed to help support our children.

We had a great experience with our Champion. My daughter has learning challenges and has trouble staying on task. Maxi was there to help with math and keeping her working on her homework. He also acted as a mentor and someone she felt comfortable talking to about social anxieties as well. She looked forward to meeting each week. I would recommend the program to anyone needing assistance.
